Blue Jays minor leaguer quietly brings home Minor League Gold Glove Award
It wasn’t just the big league team getting hardware for the Blue Jays this season.
When it comes to defense, the Toronto Blue Jays no doubt have been one of the best in the league during the past couple of seasons. Not only have they taken home the Rawlings American League Team Gold Glove Award for two consecutive seasons, they have also had many of their players considered finalists for individual Gold Glove Awards in the process.
In 2023, the Jays had a whopping five players nominated for their respective positions, which led to three eventual winners. In 2024, they had another two players, Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho, who became finalists for the third base and center field positions, respectively. In the end, Varsho was the sole winner for the Jays, capturing his first-ever Gold Glove Award after being a known defensive stalwart already for so many seasons in the majors.
Blue Jays outfield prospect Dasan Brown wins Minor League Gold Glove Award
However, it turns out that Varsho wasn’t the only player in the Blue Jays organization who took home the honors in 2024. In the minor league portion of the Gold Glove Awards that were handed out, Jays Journal No. 23 prospect Dasan Brown also managed to capture one of his own as an outfielder for his impressive defensive performance.
Flying under the radar for much of the 2024 campaign, the 23-year-old outfielder quietly put together a defensive clinic in which he committed only one error in 232 total chances for a stellar .996 fielding percentage, along with six outfield assists in 100 games in the field split between High-A and Double-A.
Brown also demonstrated his versatility by seeing action in all three outfield positions over the course of the season. But more noteworthy was the fact that he saw most of his time in center field, which is perhaps the most important and demanding position of the three.
As for how elite was his defensive play in reality? Here’s a perfect example of what he could bring to the team every day.
From an offensive standpoint, Brown still managed to compile a solid .246 average and .723 OPS with 63 runs scored, 22 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 41 RBI and 35 stolen bases in 106 games played across two minor league levels in 2024.
With that, along with his sure-handed performance, the Jays could have the next Kevin Kiermaier waiting in the wings in their system. As a result, Toronto may already have the perfect solution coming up from the minors that could help keep the team a defensive juggernaut for years to come.
