The Toronto Blue Jays Double-A affiliate, the New Hampshire Fisher-Cats had a game to remember on Tuesday night against the Portland Sea Dogs. In an unprecedented turn of events, the Double-A squad scored eight runs before recording a hit and eventually put ten on the board in the second inning, with only a single base hit.

No MLB team in the expansion era (1961) has ever scored more than four runs without the benefit of a hit. A pitcher has surrendered four runs without allowing a hit in two or fewer innings 16 times in major league history, and that happened to two Sea Dogs pitchers in one inning.

Blue Jays minor-league team made history with one wild inning

Somehow, this inning featured ten runs, and one hit and didn’t include any errors. Rising prospect Sean Keys got it started with a leadoff walk and scored on a sacrifice fly for the second out of the frame.  What followed was a stretch of pitching ineptitude unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Walk, walk, walk, hit by pitch, wild pitch, walk, hit by pitch, wild pitch, walk, walk, wild pitch.  That’s when Ishmael Munguia slapped a single into left field that drove in the ninth and tenth runs of the bizarre inning.

In total the inning saw eight walks, two hit batters, four wild pitches, one sacrifice fly, 14 batters to the plate, and two very ugly pitching lines.

Sea Dogs starter and Red Sox 16th-ranked prospect, Hayden Mullins was charged with five earned runs and five walks over 1.1 innings while Jorge Juan also allowed five runs and five walks without recording an out.  Neither pitcher’s stat line has ever been replicated in a major league game.

Keys (Blue Jays 17th-ranked prospect) continues to be heavily involved in the action for the Fisher-Cats and is a player to keep an eye on as the season progresses. He had some nice moments in spring training, with a pair of doubles and a long home run, and has three hits and five walks, with one homer and four RBI in 15 plate appearances with New Hampshire early this season.

With the Blue Jays struggling in the early part of MLB season, there have been some pleasant storylines in the minor leagues. Eloy Jiménez may not be a prospect, but he was just named Player of the Week in Triple-A following a start that included a .375 batting average, a home run, five RBI, and a .970 OPS.

With all of Toronto’s injury woes, the 29-year-old could find himself back in the majors sooner than later, especially if he continues to punish baseballs like he has over the past several weeks.
