The Toronto Blue Jays are working hard towards avoiding a rebuild and their determination to target the top players on the market has been ongoing all offseason. They just landed Anthony Santander, which is a great boost of power to that lineup and it is starting to look more and more like Toronto is not done making big moves yet.

Blue Jays insider Ben Nicholson-Smith is reporting more news in regards to Pete Alonso and Toronto. Toronto has had reported interest in the slugging first baseman all offseason and the most recent report indicates that there may be mutual interest between the two sides.

Alonso wanting to play in Toronto is pretty much the complete opposite from nearly all free agents that have signed this offseason thus far. The Blue Jays have been interested in so many stars on the market and their ability to actually close the deal has been very poor. They have been willing to hand out real money as well as they were firmly in the bidding for Juan Soto, but obviously missed out on him too. Nonetheless, the tables are turning now that Santander is locked up for semi-lengthy deal and Alonso wants in on the action.

Pete Alonso and Blue Jays reportedly have mutual interest in getting a deal done.

First base was not a position that fans believed Toronto would be looking to invest in, but here we are. This situation does bring mixed emotions to the fanbase as it has its positive and negative outcomes.

A positive outlook to this situation is the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could sign an extension while moving back to third base. That is something that both sides are open to trying out in 2025, so maybe building a lineup with Alonso will convince him to stay as the long term third baseman or even eventual DH if the situation is good enough.

The potential bad news here is that the Blue Jays possibly view Alonso as a long term replacement to Guerrero Jr. This seems very possible, given Guerrero Jr's comments towards liking Boston and his deadline to signing an extension in February. If Toronto felt great about their chances of keeping Guerrero Jr., they probably wouldn't have such keen interest in pursuing Alonso this offseason.

Forgetting what 2026 and beyond may look like for Guerrero Jr., adding Alonso to this lineup is a move that would greatly improve Toronto. The mutual interest is a very great sign that something could happen soon especially with spring training just around the corner.
