The long-awaited return of former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette finally came and went this week. Now in a New York Mets uniform, many wondered if Bichette would get the shower of cheers or shower of jeers treatment after leaving Toronto via free agency this past offseason. In the end, the former Jays star got his well-deserved standing ovation after all that he had done in his seven years with the organization.

For the series between the Mets and Blue Jays, Bichette would go just 1-for-10 with one walk, but he did manage to complete a couple of nice defensive plays to the surprise of the Blue Jays faithful. Nevertheless, as the New York-Toronto series wrapped up on Wednesday, Blue Jays fans are still left with lingering Bichette questions.

Has the disbandment of Bichette and the Blue Jays worked for both parties?

One question that permeates in the minds of Blue Jays fans is, did the team make a mistake in letting Bo go to free agency? After all, they had all the opportunity to extend him during his time in Toronto. But the Jays managed to get it done only for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the end, which turned out to be the biggest contract in franchise history.

Both Bichette and Guerrero were almost unstoppable as a duo for the Blue Jays, but how have they fared in their first season separated? The former had a slow start to his 2026 MLB campaign with the Mets, but had turned things around somewhat in recent weeks. On the season, Bichette is hitting a modest .250 average, .676 OPS, with 44 runs scored, 10 home runs and 46 RBIs in 87 games played with New York.

As for Guerrero, let’s just say it seems like he lost his power mojo. The Blue Jays slugging first baseman has batted just .267 with a .698 OPS, with four home runs and 34 RBIs in 82 total games with Toronto. Those numbers were definitely off from his pace last season, and nothing even close to what he did during the 2025 postseason as well. So does Guerrero really miss his old buddy?

In terms of Bichette’s replacement at shortstop, Andrés Giménez has done a fine job at least defensively for the Jays, posting a stellar .990 fielding percentage with a solid 1 Defensive Run Saved. Giménez has been respectable offensively as well, compiling seven home runs and 34 RBIs in 83 games of action with Toronto. However, his .237 average and only 23 runs scored and a close to 6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio has left a bit to be desired.

Judging from the Toronto fans reaction, the bulk of them still love Bichette. With reports predicting that the star shortstop will opt out of his contract after just one season with the Mets, could a potential reunion be in the cards? After all, both Bichette and the Blue Jays have experienced life apart so far in 2026, and it sure hasn’t gone too well for either parties. The Jays have struggled mightily to stay in the competition whereas Bichette and the Mets are practically out of it already.

What ends up happening could be dictated in the remaining months of the 2026 MLB season, in particular for the Blue Jays. If Toronto manages to bounce back and make the playoffs, then they would have shown they don’t need Bichette to have success. However, if the Jays do end up failing to make the postseason, showing that their former shortstop could potentially be the missing link, don’t be surprised if Bichette comes back to make sure all questions will be answered heading into the 2027 year.
