The year-to-year comparable isn't good

The 2026 season hasn’t gone well for the Toronto Blue Jays. After coming within one win of a championship last season, the Blue Jays were determined to get back to the World Series once again.

But instead, Toronto has struggled just to stay in contention for a playoff spot. The Blue Jays have seen their offense, defense and pitching all fail them at times, preventing them from gaining any type of momentum.

If we take a look at every team coming out of the All-Star break the Blue Jays unfortunately find themselves among the top of the heap in terms of the biggest declines in the win column from year to year. Toronto only had 45 wins in total this year (going into Jul. 17), as compared to 55 at the same point in time last season. As a result, the -10 win differential placed them fourth among all MLB teams behind the San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers and New York Mets.

The bottom for teams were expected to be contenders this year

Of course, the Mets were the ones that ultimately won the Bo Bichette sweepstakes this past offseason. However, the former Blue Jays' star hasn’t been able to help their cause as New York has suffered the biggest drop in 2026 with a -15 win differential. The Tigers have been quite a bit of a surprise as well, as they have struggled despite being led by Tarik Skubal and a strong young core of players that made the playoffs just last season.

As for the teams with the biggest improvement, the constant bottom feeders for the past few seasons in the Chicago White Sox has made the largest jump, accumulating 18 more wins already in 2026 compared to last year. They are currently fighting for the AL Central division lead as well. They are followed by the Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals to round out the top five with the greatest increase in win totals.

With that, the Blue Jays sure have their work cut out for them as they enter the second half of 2026. For one thing, Toronto doesn’t need to follow the exact win pace from last season, since their 94 wins helped them secure the AL East division title. So if they are aiming to just make the playoffs by landing a wild card spot, they likely don’t need to match that win total. However, with a bunch of teams that they will need to surpass just to get back into the race, the Jays better start getting some wins soon before it’s too late.
