The Toronto Blue Jays have made various in-season depth moves this season, ranging from Patrick Corbin and Lenyn Sosa earlier in the year, while bringing back former top prospect Simeon Woods Richardson in recent weeks.

Over the weekend the Blue Jays made their latest trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. Torontoacquired infielder Luis Urias from Arizona in exchange for cash considerations, as per Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

Can Luis Urias help bring some offensive production in the Blue Jays lineup?

The 29-year-old Urias has already been a well-travelled journeyman, having spent time with the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Athletics and Diamondbacks organizations.

In total, he has accumulated parts of eight years of major league experience with his best season coming in 2021 when he was a full-time player with the Brewers. That year, Urias compiled a .249 batting average, .789 OPS, while establishing career highs in runs scored (77), doubles (25), home runs (23), RBIs (75), stolen bases (5) and walks (63) over 150 total games played with Milwaukee.

Unfortunately, the infielder has struggled to maintain a big league gig ever since, having served mainly as a reserve player for each of the previous four seasons while spending his entire 2026 in the minors, primarily with the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate Reno Aces. However, Urias has been hitting well with the Aces thus far, posting a stellar .361 average, .939 OPS, along with 16 runs scored, nine doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs in just 27 games of action.

The Blue Jays will hope that they will be getting more of the power-producing version of Urias from his 2021 and 2026 season. Toronto’s inept offense currently ranks just 23rd in the league in home runs and 24th in the league in runs scored with 316.

More importantly, as Bannon has pointed out, Urias actually hits well against left-handed pitching, which is an area the Blue Jays definitely need improvement in. Toronto currently owns a pitiful .218 average and .654 OPS against southpaws this season. As a result, his potential power stroke could come in handy in boosting the Jays’ overall offensive potential going forward.

Bannon had speculated that Urias would be assigned to Triple-A Buffalo, but as Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet has indicated, he will be joining the Jays’ big league club by exercising an upward mobility clause. So Blue Jays should be able to get their first look of their newest acquisition as early as this week.
