The Toronto Blue Jays have been hit with ongoing injury woes, particularly to their pitching staff and they have been searching for replacements ever since the first week of the 2026 season. That search has now led them to a familiar face in the hopes of building back some of the massive pitching depth they've lost. On Wednesday (Jun. 3), the Blue Jays acquired their former top prospect Simeon Woods Richardson from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations, as per Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

Woods Richardson had been recently designated for assignment by the Twins after a rough start to his campaign. In 12 games this season with Minnesota, the 25-year-old right-hander had posted a dismal 0-7 record with a 7.74 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, giving up 41 earned runs including nine home runs with 25 walks and 26 strikeouts in 47.2 total innings pitched.

However, Woods Richardson had been a mainstay in the Twins’ rotation for much of his previous two seasons, making at least 22 starts, maintaining an ERA under 4.20 ERA while recording 100+ strikeouts. The Blue Jays will hope to be getting more of that from the 25-year-old pitcher than what we have witnessed thus far in 2026.

Could the former Blue Jays top pitching prospect help solve their decimated pitching staff?

In bringing back Woods Richardson, the former Jays top prospect has come full circle with the organization. The right-hander originally came to Toronto as part of a package along with Anthony Kay in the Marcus Stroman trade with the New York Mets at the 2019 trade deadline. Woods Richardson was among the Blue Jays’ top five prospects in the organization during the 2020 and 2021 season's according to MLB Pipeline and appeared to be a solid future piece of their rotation puzzle.

However his tenure with Toronto would become short-lived when he was dealt to Minnesota at the 2021 trade deadline along with top positional prospect Austin Martin for Twins ace José Berríos. The Jays needed a significant boost to their rotation for the stretch run that year and beyond. They had believed that they found one in Berríos, whom they quickly signed to a seven-year extension afterwards, as Toronto sacrificed two promising prospects to get the deal done.

As for Woods Richardson, his role now with Toronto has yet to be determined. But Jays manager John Schneider apparently has a plan for the once-promising right-hander, including a way to get him back on track, according to Sportsnet.

“We’ll see if it’s as a bulk start, relief, long relief, whatever it is. He’s been good for a couple of years and kinda got off track this year … I think there’s some tweaks to the arsenal we can make,” said Schneider.

One thing is for sure, Woods Richardson will likely be thrusted into action immediately for the Blue Jays once he arrives while Toronto hopes to get more reinforcements soon on the horizon.
