Bleacher Report’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. trade proposal is an absolute laugher

The Toronto Blue Jays have had an interesting offseason. After missing out on Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Roki Sasaki despite trying their hardest to sign them, rumors have begun to circulate with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s name being tossed around as someone the team could consider moving if they can’t get a long-term extension completed before the 2025 season gets underway.

In a recent article from Bleacher Report, they looked at some potential trades involving Guerrero Jr. and some teams that could be potential fits for him. They listed the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and more, but the most enticing fit seemed to be the New York Mets, who have been rumored to have checked in on Guerrero Jr.’s availability. However, the trade proposal they put forth was completely ridiculous.

Bleacher Report’s trade idea for the Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a joke

They suggest that the Blue Jays trade Guerrero Jr. to the Mets just in exchange for RHP Brandon Sproat, who is the Mets' number one overall prospect and MLB’s number 38 prospect. Sproat is a good pitcher with potential and considering the Blue Jays’ need for pitching depth, he could be a piece they look to add in any trade. However, thinking he would be the only player that comes back in a trade, and thinking the Blue Jays wouldn’t hang up the phone laughing, chalks this trade proposal up as a joke.

If the Blue Jays do decide they want to move on from Guerrero Jr. assuming they can’t get a deal done on an extension, they should be looking for pitching depth, an elite hitter, some cash, and at least two prospects that could make an impact in the MLB within two seasons. The fact they thought this was a logical deal is insanity, and the proposal should be laughed out of the room. At minimum, using the trade that brought Juan Soto to the Yankees in his contract year as a baseline should be the discussion and not whatever Bleacher Report was thinking.

The Blue Jays have made no indications they want to trade Guerrero Jr., as they seem to be looking to continue extension discussions as the 2025 season inches closer. Hopefully, they can get an extension done sooner rather than later, and can instead focus on improving the rest of their roster as they look to win a World Series.
