The Toronto Blue Jays have been trying to find a way to lock up their superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but have not been able to get a new contract done. While they have had a disastrous offseason, the Blue Jays are hoping they can find a way back to the postseason after missing it last season when they finished at the bottom of the AL East with a 74-88 record. However, an MLB analyst recently suggested a plan for them to salvage the situation with Guerrero Jr.
MLB analyst and former GM lays out Guerrero Jr. plan for Blue Jays
In the segment on MLB Network, the asking price of Guerrero Jr. was revealed to be around $450 million, but it was pointed out that the Blue Jays' offer was at least $100 million off of what he wanted. Former GM Steve Phillips mentions that if the deal had been done earlier, they could have gotten something done around that $350 million mark, but now the price has risen, especially after Juan Soto signed with the New York Mets.
He lays out his plan as a series of trades and signings, starting with signing Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, and Anthony Santander. After that, he suggests they trade Guerrero Jr. and restock their farm system in hopes of planning for the future while also being in contention with a different-looking lineup.
He believes making those moves could make the Blue Jays a playoff contender, and re-iterates that he believes they could get deals done with all of those free agents if they become a bit more aggressive. His idea was met with hesitation from other analysts in the segment, but they didn't turn it away as a terrible idea.
In terms of what teams could make sense to acquire Guerrero Jr., he lists the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners. He also points out that considering the Blue Jays have continued to pursue Alonso, it means they're protecting themselves and their depth in the event they aren't able to bring Guerrero Jr. back.
Finally, Phillips also thinks that the Blue Jays could be more successful this season with those moves, and could also help their future a lot more to keep them in contention for many seasons to come, especially if they don't have an extension completed before the 2025 season gets going considering the belief that Guerrero Jr. set a deadline for extension discussions, and they have a higher risk of losing him once that deadline passes.
