The Toronto Blue Jays have had some interesting rumors surrounding them recently. From Pete Alonso potentially having an interest in signing with the team, to Roki Sasaki selecting the Blue Jays as a finalist, to Juan Soto considering them as his new home, Toronto has been all over the map in trying to thread the needle in the AL East.

One of the more interesting rumors that’s been following them around is the status of star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who has yet to sign a long-term extension with the Blue Jays, causing concern for fans who want to see it get done. Guerrero Jr. committing to the team could change everything; his failure to do so could upend the grand plan, too.

While trade rumors always follow star players around if they’re on an expiring contract, a recent trade proposal from Bleacher Report made headlines for how wild it sounded. In their proposal, they suggested the San Diego Padres acquire Guerrero Jr. in exchange for Jake Cronenworth, Yuki Matsui, and Leodalis De Vries.

Bleacher Report’s Blue Jays-Padres trade proposal is absolutely wild

They did point out that the deal is a stretch, but it’s insane they thought this a fair deal, considering Cronenworth and Matsui would come to the Blue Jays with $90.5 million still owed to them. For them to think that the Blue Jays would be open to trading one of their best players in exchange for taking on extra money is ridiculous, and makes the trade proposal sound funnier than it is serious.

It’s also a stretch that the Blue Jays would even consider trading Guerrero Jr. after importing Anthony Santander. They would obviously prefer to keep him around, and even if they ever became open to it, it would take a lot more than a single exciting prospect and two players that are owed ridiculous amounts of money to make a deal come close.

At the end of the day, Blue Jays fans are hoping the two sides can get an extension done sooner rather than later. They would like to improve their roster so Guerrero Jr. is more enticed to stick around, but time will tell what ends up happening. Hopefully, a long-term extension can be agreed to before the 2025 season gets underway, and everyone can focus on getting back in the fight for a World Series.
