Baseball America tabs two Blue Jays pitchers as prospect sleepers for 2027

The Toronto Blue Jays have had some strong pitching prospects develop in their farm system in recent years. In particular, Trey Yesavage, Mason Fluharty and Brayden Fisher have come up through the system. Now Ricky Tiedemann has started to make his mark.

There could be a few more coming down the road as Baseball America recently tabbed two Blue Jays pitching prospects as two of five potential AL sleepers to watch in 2027. Those two players happen to be right-handed pitchers Daniel Guerra and Danny Thompson Jr.

The Blue Jays could have an intense pitching battle in spring training in 2027

Guerra was signed by Toronto as an international free agent out of Venezuela back in 2022. Guerra had a solid campaign last year with Single-A Dunedin where he posted a 3.40 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, along with 84 strikeouts in 82 total innings over 22 appearances. The 22-year-old has continued to show success with his growth and development of his game this season as well. He has risen to No. 17 on the Blue Jays’ top prospects list according to MLB Pipeline.

Guerra has ascended three minor league levels in 2026, reaching Triple-A Buffalo by the season’s end. In total, the right-hander compiled a solid 5-3 record with a 3.23 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, with 102 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched over 24 games played that included 15 starts.

At the rate that Guerra has developed, it wouldn’t be too surprising that he will challenge for a roster spot in the majors as early as next season.

As for Thompson, he was actually an eighth-round selection out of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays just last year. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has already made great strides with his game this season split between High-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire. Thompson has registered a 3-5 record with a tidy 3.41 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, limiting the opposition to 76 hits along with 124 strikeouts in 100.1 innings of work over 24 appearances that included 20 starts.

With the possibility of starting next season at Triple-A Buffalo for the Blue Jays, Thompson could potentially be on the fast track to the big leagues in no time. Having moved up to No. 15 on the Jays’ top prospects list already this season, fans should look for Thompson to easily crack their top 10 by next year if he proves that his success remains sustainable.

The most positive part about the gains these two pitchers have made is that they aren't the only ones that have taken 2026 by the horns and have made some noise in the system. Three of their top five prospects are pitchers, including Nolan Perry (No. 2), Johnny King (No. 3) and Cole Carlon (No. 4) who was their first round pick from this past July's draft.

There's also Dasan Hill (No. 8) who was acquired from the Twins in the Jeff Hoffman trade. Gage Stanifer (No. 10) has had an up-and-down season but could be turning into a very useful bullpen arm, while Jake Bloss (No. 12) and Brandon Barriera (ranked outside of top 30) are heading to the Arizona Fall League.

As a result, the near future looks bright not only for these two promising pitching prospects, but for the Blue Jays’ future pitching staff as a whole.
