MLB Pipeline’s Blue Jays Top 30 update highlights two under-the-radar pitchers

When MLB Pipeline revealed their latest update on the Toronto Blue Jays top 30 prospects list, there was quite a shakeup within the system. Among those on the way up included Sean Keys and Charles McAdoo, who both made their MLB debuts this season, while injury woes have cost pitching prospects Jake Bloss and Ricky Tiedemann a few slots. But none stood out more than two unexpected risers in the Blue Jays’ latest prospect shakeup.

The unheralded Danny Thompson Jr. and Daniel Guerra came out of nowhere and suddenly landed into the top 16 prospects in the Blue Jays' organization. Thompson would occupy the No. 15 spot while Guerra would take hold of No. 16. So who are they and what have they done?

The Blue Jays have another two prospects to watch with after strong 2026 campaigns

Thompson is a pitcher that the Blue Jays selected in the eighth round out of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from the 2025 MLB Draft just last year. The right-hander impressed in 2025 with Single-A Dunedin coming out of the draft. In just 10 appearances, Thompson posted a stellar 0.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, giving up just one run and 15 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work.

The 23-year-old prospect has continued to look good this season as he had already moved up to the Jays’ Double-A New Hampshire after starting his 2026 minor league campaign in High-A Vancouver. In 19 total appearances that included 15 starts across the two levels, Thompson has compiled a 2-3 record with a solid 3.46 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, giving up 59 hits with 98 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched.

As for Guerra, the Blue Jays signed the international free agent out of Venezuela back in 2022 when he was 18-years-old. The right-hander struggled initially in his early years in the Jays’ minor league system. Nevertheless, Guerra has finally found his groove last season and has carried that momentum into this year as well.

Guerra has spent the majority of his 2026 campaign in High-A Vancouver, where he has amassed a 3-3 record with a tidy 3.17 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, giving up just four home runs all season while striking out 73 in 54 total innings of work over 12 starts. The 22-year-old prospect would capture the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week honours in mid-April in the process.

In fact, he was on a roll in which he yielded only six earned runs while striking out 35 batters in 22.2 innings pitched in five starts before suffering an elbow strain that put him out of action for over a month. Guerra has recently returned to action and will be looking to build upon his strong season.

With the rise of both Thompson and Guerra that have all of a sudden put themselves on the map in the Blue Jays organization, Toronto fans can now be on the lookout of the two promising prospects in the coming years as they continue to strive for their potential MLB debut in due time.
