The Toronto Blue Jays have made the first big free agent splash of the offseason, reportedly signing Dylan Cease to a multi-year contract. Many executives told ESPN, anonymously, that they felt the Blue Jays would do something of that ilk - and a few even mentioned them as the favourites to land Cease.
Now that the Blue Jays have made those executives look like Nostradamus's on the pitching side, maybe they can help them go 2-for-2 with their takes on the hitting side.
Anonymous execs think the Blue Jays also have a chance to land this top free agent
The first question that the executives were asked had to do with which team they envisioned landing the player who is regarded as the biggest free agent on the market. The Blue Jays finished third in the poll as the team who was most likely to sign Kyle Tucker.
The actual question that was posed was, "Will Kyle Tucker get more than $400 million, and who will give it to him?" Six of the respondents said, "yes," the outfielder will command that much cash while 10 of them said "no." For the second part of the question, six executives said Tucker will end up with the New York Yankees, four said the Dodgers and three said the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays had offers in on both Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto that, at the very least, matched what they got from the Dodgers and Mets respectively. And after they extended home grown star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a record $500 million contract in April, would it really surprise anyone if they were the highest bidder for Tucker?
Sometimes money isn't enough though and Tucker would have to actually want to play for the Blue Jays. But if he wants to go to a team that is clearly pushing all of it's chips onto the table in an attempt to win a World Series, than he needs to look no further than the Blue Jays. While the contract with Cease will eat into their overall payroll, it would be foolish to think that was going to be the only big splash Toronto would attempt to make this offseason.
