As MLB free agency slowly rolls on, not a lot of things happen. Fans of the Toronto Blue Jays have a very long wish list. That list consists of bullpen help, re-signing Bo Bichette and landing another star in potentially Kyle Tucker.

Unfortunately, it seems like it may come down to the Blue Jays landing one of the two, not both. Yes, they do have a high payroll, but since they aren’t a private owner and are owned by Rogers which is in the public sector, they may not be able to afford both players in reality. So, which player should they sign? Well, the most obvious choice for the Blue Jays would be Bichette.

There is a good argument for both players. They both are great players and can help push the franchise forward. But wouldn’t it be better to have your homegrown talent do that? Bichette was a draft pick of the organization in 2016 and has quickly risen to being one of the best hitters on the planet.

Bichette may not hit as many home runs as much as Tucker, but he will have180 plus hits in a season. Additionally, he’ll have a higher batting average by at least 10 points, if not more. Bichette has also shown he can come up clutch in big moments like he did with his home run in Game 7 of the 2025 World Series.

Additionally, the Blue Jays don’t need another outfielder who slots in as DH from time to time. They have that in Santander and Springer. Yes, Tucker is better, but the Blue Jays have an abundance of outfielders which makes it harder to justify the signing. Whereas Bichette fills what is currently a need at either shortstop or second base. His spot in the batting order also allows the hitters ahead of him to focus on getting on base as Bichette showed this year he can hit well with runners in scoring position.

Plus, after what the fan base just saw, does it really make sense to not try and bring him back? Or even sign Tucker over him? No, not really. In fact, it’ll likely change the morale and the chemistry of the group, which has been said to be one of the best club houses ever. It just doesn’t seem logical to sign Tucker over Bichette.

Obviously, if there is a way that Toronto’s front office can sign them both, that would be awesome. Adding them both to a lineup as good as the Blue Jays could put them over the edge. But if they can’t and they can only sign one of them, it has to be Bichette.
