The Toronto Blue Jays are in a tough spot at this stage in the season. At the time of this writing, they are near the bottom of the American League standings with a 45-51 record. However, they are also only 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins for the final wild card spot in the AL.

With the Blue Jays' playoff hopes still alive, there is a chance that they will be buyers despite their poor record. If the Blue Jays decide to go for it and be buyers, one team that they should consider doing business with is the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks have struggled with consistency this season and could end up being sellers at the deadline because of it. If this occurs, the Blue Jays have a few pitchers that they should be eyeing from the Diamondbacks.

Eduardo Rodriguez, Michael Soroka, and Merrill Kelly are three specific pitchers whom the Blue Jays should consider targeting from Arizona. They each would have the potential to be strong additions to Toronto's pitching staff, which needs a real boost right now.

Why the Blue Jays should consider targeting Rodriguez, Soroka, and Kelly

Questions about Rodriguez's future in Arizona have come up often this season. If he is officially shopped by the Diamondbacks, he is exactly the kind of high-impact starter who Toronto should try to add. The six-foot-two lefty is having a great season this year with the Diamondbacks, as evidenced by his 8-3 record, 2.29 ERA, and 79 strikeouts. With numbers like these, he would be a strong addition to the middle of Toronto's rotation.

Soroka is another Diamondbacks pitcher who could be a great fit on the Blue Jays' roster. The six-foot-five righty has been impressing this season, as he has an 8-3 record, a 3.07 ERA, and 79 strikeouts. It has been a strong campaign for far for the former All-Star, and he is another pitcher who Toronto should consider bringing in to bolster their starting pitching that has taken a hit, performance wise, over the last few weeks.

As for Kelly, he has struggled with consistency this season. In 16 appearances so far this season with Arizona, he has a 7-8 record and a 5.38 ERA. However, he also had a 3.52 or lower in three out of his four previous seasons before 2026, so it is fair to wonder if he could bounce back with a change of scenery. He could be a solid buy-low option for the Blue Jays to add for more pitching depth.

The Blue Jays will likely not want to spend top prospect capital on players that might be rentals in a season they might not even make the playoffs. But there's also some thought to the fact that the rest of the AL is just as bad and paying a little higher for more impact could make a huge difference.
