Toronto Blue Jays minor-league news and notes from the morning of April 20th, 2019, including the status of the recently demoted Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and the assignment of several minor-leaguers to new levels.

Cheshire assigned to Double-A

RHP Jonathan Cheshire has been assigned to Double-A New Hampshire from High-A Dunedin, the Eastern League’s transactions page confirmed Thursday. Cheshire, 24, was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2017 and spent the 2018 season with Dunedin, where he tossed 51.0 innings to an ERA of 2.47, striking out 45.

Gurriel Jr. to play the field soon

According to Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic ($), recently demoted Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will “resume playing the field soon” at Triple-A Buffalo after logging some at-bats as the team’s DH. McGrath goes on to note that Gurriel, 25, could see time at both infield and outfield positions with the Bisons.

Law promoted to Dunedin

RHP Connor Law, who began the season with the Low-A Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League, has been promoted to the Dunedin Blue Jays, per the Midwest League’s transactions page. Law, 24, tossed seven scoreless innings in Lansing and spent the 2018 season with Dunedin and Vancouver.

Blue Jays sign RHP Jonathan Bernal

The Blue Jays have signed RHP Jonathan Bernal to a minor-league contract, according to the team’s MLB.com transactions page. While there is next to no information known about the young righty, a recent blog post (linked here) could shed a little light on his situation.

Lansing’s Gold hits for cycle

Lansing Lugnuts catcher Ryan Gold hit for the cycle Thursday, accomplishing the feat thanks to a grand slam and a two-run triple. Gold, 21, has slashed .250/.333/.438 thus far, adding five runs scored and eight hits overall in 10 games.

Burns to IL in Buffalo

The Buffalo Bisons announced that INF/OF Andy Burns has been placed on the 7-day IL. Burns, who recently re-signed with the organization after a stint in Korea, has torn up International League pitching so far, posting a .923 OPS in seven games.

Davis to Dunedin for rehab

The High-A Florida State League announced Thursday that outfielder Jonathan Davis has been assigned to Dunedin to continue his rehab. Davis, 26, spent the 2018 season with the Fisher Cats and Bisons, posting a cumulative .782 OPS in 490 at-bats.
