Five Blue Jays prospects named to Baseball America Top 100

Baseball America launched their Top 100 Prospect rankings for 2017 with five Toronto Blue Jays farmhands making the cut.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won’t turn 18 years of age until mid-March yet he was the highest ranked Blue Jays prospect garnering the 20th spot on the BA Top 100 list. Guerrero Jr. was also only one of five players to be awarded a 70-Power grade

Outfielder Anthony Alford is the second best ranked Blue Jays player taking the 59th spot. Alford was plagued by injuries in 2016 but has all the tools to climb the list with a good showing in 2017.

Newly signed Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. came in at 73rd on the list even before playing an inning on North American soil. Baseball America projected the 23-year old Gurriel Jr to debut in 2017.

The only Jays hurler to make the Top 100 was right-hander Sean Reid-Foley who made his debut on the list at the 75th spot. Reid-Foley could force his way into the conversation with the big club if he dominates early on at double-A (New Hampshire).

The fifth and final Blue Jays prospect is slugging first baseman Rowdy Tellez who checked in at 95th on the rankings. Much has been said about Tellez becoming a Blue Jays fixture sooner than later due to the departure of Edwin Encarnacion.

Some other fun facts about the Top 100 rankings:

The Atlanta Braves were top of the class with eight prospects in the Top 100 followed by the New York Yankees who had seven named to the list.

Three Canadians made the century club with the Mariners Tyler O’Neill (38th), Braves Mike Soroka (48th) and Padres Cal Quantrill (96th) all getting their dues.

Boston Red Sox phenom Andrew Benintendi took top honors wth Yoan Moncada and Dansby Swanson rounding out the top three respectively.

Former Blue Jays prospect Jeff Hoffman (Tulowitzki trade) ranks 36th while Franklin Barreto (Donaldson trade) ranked 40th.

Pitcher Tyler Beede who opted not to sign with the Blue Jays in 2011 snuck in at 89th.
