MiLB Recap – Herd Splits Double Header

Buffalo Bisons vs Scranton/ Wilkes- Barre Rail Riders (Double Header)

Game 1 (Loss 0-4)

A decent start for Joel Pinero goes to waste as the Herd just could not get the offense rolling against a dominate start for the Rail Riders.  Joel De La Cruz and James Pazos of the Rail Riders were nearly un-hittable as the Bison bats only managed to gather 4 hits.  Pinero however gave up 10 hits to the opposition and allowed 3 of the 4 runs.  He was able to strike out 6 and did not allow any free passes.  A decent start that could have kept the Bisons in the game long enough to win if the offense could have managed basically anything.  Tough start for the offense in the double header.  Pretty good for Pinero’s Triple-A debut despite not having his best stuff.

Not wanting to hand out any hardware for this performance.  A true team loss.

Game 2 (Win 6-4)

After the break the Herd must have learned that the ball needs to be hit in play to win ball games because they broke out in the 3rd inning.  Scoring 4 runs in the top of the 3rd.  The Rail Riders would not start their comeback bid for a few innings as Randy Wolf continued to impress.  Wolf tossed 5 innings and gave up just 1 run while striking out 3.  He gave way to Miguel Castro who came on and gave up a 3 run homer to catcher Juan Graterol.  He finished the inning with 2 strikeouts total but the damage was done.  Going into the top of the 7th the game was tied at 4.  The offense kept rolling and scrapped together 2 more runs and the bullpen kept the Rail Riders off the board the remainder of the game.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats @ New Britain Rock Cats (Win 5-3)

The Fisher Cats attack got off to an early start as the jumped all over Rock Cat starter Ryan Carpenter in the first inning.  Dalton Pompey showed some patience as he walked to open the game and would eventually come around to score.  With the bases loaded following an error Kevin Nolan hit a sac fly to bring in Pompey.  Ryan Schimpf came in after and roped a double in to the gap that scored 2 more runs.  The Fisher Cats had a 3 run lead going into the 2nd inning.  Murphy Smith started off great but faded in the 4th and 5th innings.  His final line was 5 innings allowing 4 hits, 3 walks, 3 earned runs, with 4 strikeouts.  With some more offense and solid bullpen work the Fisher Cats would run the score up to 5-3.  Dustin Antolin and Wil Browning would pitch 2 innings of scoreless ball each.

After the Lugnuts got off to a great start the Capitals came roaring back.  An errant pick off throw would lead to the down fall of the Lugnuts.  The throw by Jose Fernandez would lead to a 3 run inning for the Caps and they would close it out for a final of 8-5.  Conor Fisk had a decent start but would eventually allow 3 earned runs over his 5.2 innings of work.  Tim Mayza came on to pitch and would only record 1 out and allow 2 more runs before getting out of the inning.

The Lugnut offense kept them in the game but the pitching melt down would eventually be to much for their offense to over come.  Jason Leblebijian popped a 3 run homer in the 3rd inning and was his 6th on the season.  Alex Maldonado and Boomer Collins recorded RBI singles as well in the effort.

A game of hard knocks for the Canadians ends in a shut out.  Not only were the shut out but they also only got 2 hits in the game period.  The Emeralds pitching proved to be to hot to handle for C’s bats Sunday.  The pitching was also lackluster as starter Francisco Rios allowed 2 earned runs over 4.1 innings.  Bob Wheatley would come on and pitch 1 inning and allow 3 more runs to help bury the C’s.  There was just not enough going right for the C’s Sunday and they will look to get it going for the next game.
