Blue Jays’ Devon Travis Signs

Back when the Blue Jays announced they had traded Anthony Gose to the Detroit Tigers, fans were not sure exactly what to make of the move. While we were OK with giving up Gose, we were not entirely sure what we were getting in Devon Travis. And, in efforts to find out, we heard things like he had a flawed swing, that his defense was not really big league ready.

As the winter progressed and the club was unable to bring in an impact second baseman, it looked more and more that there would be a competition for the starting job. After a rough start to the spring, Travis began to separate himself from the pack. He won the starting 2B job and has not stopped separating himself from the rest of the planet.

Heading in to Thursday night’s game against the Indians, Travis is the proud owner of a .342 average, a .405 OBP and 191 wRC+! He’s collected 6 HR and 19 RBI! All of this form a guy who was put in at the bottom of the order. He’s been quickly moved up to bat 2nd and leadoff. His defense has been great. He’s not made an error thus far. He’s been solid with a UZR/150 of -0.7. That makes it sound worse than it has actually been when looking at what we see day to day. There has been nothing to complain about.

Here at Jays Journal, we fell in love with Devon Travis when he joined our Jays’ Nest show nearly 2 months ago. His winning personality has won fans over, but it is his play on the field that has us all buzzing.

Now, you can call me a “homer” for this post, but I don’t care. I’m letting my Devon Travis flag fly! It is easy to get on the bandwagon and cheer for him with an April performance that included his first ever MLB hit that went for his first ever MLB HR in his first ever MLB game at Yankee Stadium! What’s not to get excited about? Well, the critics will say that it would be silly to expect him to keep this level of play going. I get that. But, why do we need to rain on this parade? We don’t.

So, what I am proposing is a fun new movement. I’m suggesting that we get something going, here. Last season, a phenomenon swept the fandom of Major League Baseball. The Hunter Pence signs appeared everywhere in an attempt to troll the Giants outfielder. It was a great display of passion, fandom and creativity. I’m going to turn that on its head. I’m going to go whole hog on the Devon Travis fangirling. We’ll be sharing Devon Travis signs that express the pure awesomeness that is Devon Travis. It’s a fun project that may be “homer” like, but that’s OK. It’s fun. Feel free to join in, if you like.
