On the mound the Herd used 5 pitchers to shut out Rochester on 8 hits. Veteran Randy Wolf throw 50 of his 82 pitches for strikes to collect his first win in his Bisons début. Preston Guilmet really attacked the Red Wings hitter with 21 or his 25 pitches going for strikes. Preston struck out 3, no walks over his 2 innings of work. Gregory pitched a perfect 8th and Bobby Korecky registered his 23rd Bisons save, first of 2015.

Prospect watch: Sean Ochinko is one of my darkhorses for 2015. He made his 2015 début, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (3-1)

New Britain Rock Cats (1-3)

The Fisher Cats played a double-header due to their Opening Day being postponed. After dropping the first game 3-0, the Fisher Cats got their revenge by getting a strike out of their own, 4-0.

Game 1

At the Plate the Fisher Cats were held to 3 hits in a complete game (7IP) 3-0 shutout at the hands Shane Carle. 1B K.C. Hobson continues to swing a hot bat with a hit and 3B Kevin Nolan and RF Matt Newman chipped in with singles of their own. SS Shane Opitz, Hobson, CF Jon Berti, 3B Nolan each committed an error in the game.

On the mound Casey Lawrence maded his 27th start with the Fisher Cats, but feel to 9-11 for his NH career. Casey gave up 2ER, walked 2 and struck out 5, but he also gave up a solo shot in the 4th inning. Blake McFarland relieved Lawrence in the 7th inning and retired the only two batters he faced, punching out one of them.

Game 2

At the Plate SS Kevin Nolan drove in a pair and RF Matt Newman connected on his first home run. 3B Andy Burns and 2B Jorge Flores were the only Fisher Cats not to register a hit. DH K.C. Hobson swinging a hot bat in the season opening series collected his 2nd double.

On the mound 25-year-old Dustin Antolin made his first professional start, going 2.2IP with a hit, 3 BB, and 3K. He was followed by Greg Burke (W, 1-0) and Danny Barnes (S, 1) who pitched 2.1IP and 2.0IP respectively

Prospect watch: RP Dustin Antolin, a native of Mililani Hawaii and 2008 11th round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. I mentioned him on today’s podcast and most likely butchered his last name…sorry Dustin, no disrespect. Dustin continues to put up solid career numbers and is entering his third season with NH. Last year he posted a 4-6 record with 3.38 ERA, 15 BB and 52K in 37IP.

Next game: NH TBA vs Reading Tom Windle

Dunedin Blue Jays (2-2)

Clearwater Threshers (2-2)

This one was a battle from the first pitch until the final inning with the D-Jays pushing the winning run over in the bottom of the 8th. D-Jays 6, Threshers 5.

At the Plate DH Michael Saunders went 1-for-1 with a run scored before giving way to L.B. Dantzler. 1B Matt Dean, 2B Andy Fermin, and LF David Harris each had 2-hits, but it was Harris who delivered the biggest blow with his first home run. Harris hit a solo shot and a two-run single for 3 RBI.

On the mound Luis Santos pitched 4.2, gave up 3 runs on 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3 and was taken yard by a rehabbing Domonic Brown in the 3rd inning. Chad Girodo was tagged with a blown save and the win. He pitched an inning and third, allowing a run on 2-hits, no walks and 2 strike outs. Wil Browning notched his 2nd save after allowing a hit, a walk and strike out in the 9th.

Prospect watch: Dawel Lugo hitting 3rd today is off to good start with hits in his first 4 games. He has yet to work a walk, but he has only struck out 2 in his first taste of Advanced-A ball. Not bad for a 20 year-old playing against men 2.6 years older.

Next game: D-Jays TBD vs Bradenton TBD

Lansing Lugnuts (3-1) Fort Wayne (0-1)

At the Plate the Lugnuts were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 9 stranded. The game went to extra innings when Tim Locastro single scored D.J. Davis for the tying run. Despite being hitless in 6 at-bats, Danny Jansen has contributed. This time he was able to drive in the winning run with a SAC and he had a walk earlier in the game. Gunnar Heidt had 2 steals, as did Chris Carlson. Richard Urena and Tim Locastro each had stolen bases of their own.

On the mound Chase Mallard, in his Lugnuts début, allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 4 over 5IP. Colton Turner, who started 12 games for Vancouver in 2014, pitched three and third, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks and striking out 3. Phil Kish was credited with the win for his 1.2IP of work.

Prospect watch: Gunnar Heidt, 13th round 2014 draft pick, comes to us from Charleston College. He played 25 games in 2014, all at 2nd base. This season he will be manning 3rd. The 22-year-old has a good approach at the plate and can swipe the odd base.

Next Game: Lugnuts TBD vs Fort Wayne Ernesto Montas
