The 2026 MLB Trade Deadline is getting closer, as it is now less than two months away. With this, trade activity around the league will soon be picking up as contenders look to boost their roster.

Given how this season has gone so far for the Blue Jays, they should be looking to make some upgrades to their roster as soon as possible. The Blue Jays currently sit third in the American League East with a 34-38 record. They are also two games back of the Athletics for the final wild card spot in the American League.

However, if the Blue Jays hope to make some additions this season, they will likely need to move on from some of their current players. When looking at the Blue Jays' roster, it is clear that they have some expendable veteran players they could move this season with George Springer and Jeff Hoffman among them.

Why Blue Jays' Springer & Hoffman could finish the season elsewhere

Out of the two players on this list, Springer is the most interesting. After posting 32 home runs, 84 RBI, and a .309 batting average in 140 games last season, he has six home runs and a .208 batting average in 50 games this season. It has been a tough year for the 13-year veteran, and a big reason has been the toe injury he suffered in April. While this is the case, the Blue Jays may have a decision to make with him if he does not heat back up soon.

Springer is in the final season of his contract, so he could very well be a player that the Blue Jays consider moving on from this season. This is even more of the case if the Blue Jays remain on the wrong side of the playoff line once the deadline gets closer. They will also be welcoming back Addison Barger of the Injured List soon and that cut further cut into Springer's playing time as most of the other outfielders on the roster are putting up better numbers than him.

Hoffman, meanwhile, could be a player that the Blue Jays consider moving this season as a salary dump. The 6-foot-5 righty has had a tough 2026 season, posting a 5.64 ERA in 33 appearances so far this campaign. He also notably lost his closer role with the Blue Jays earlier this season due to his struggles.

Hoffman has had a solid start to June, allowing just one earned run in five appearances. While this is the case, it is fair to wonder if he could be a reliever that the Blue Jays are willing to part ways with if the right offer comes along. A change of scenery may be needed for the 2024 All-Star and there could be some contenders who see more value in him than he is giving the Blue Jays.

Trading Springer and / or Hoffman doesn't necessarily signal that the Blue Jays are going to be traditional sellers at the deadline, but if they are going to upgrade the roster, these are two players who those upgrades could and should replace.
