Will impending Blue Jays free agent take Troy Tulowitzki's free agency advice?

Troy Tulowitzki wasn't a member of the Toronto Blue Jays for a long time, but he thinks current shortstop Bo Bichette should be. Tulowitzki played with the Blue Jays from 2015-2017 hitting .250/.313/.414 with 36 home runs, 122 RBIs and produced a 5.2 bWAR in 238 games while helping the Blue Jays to the AL East division title in 2015, and getting back to the post-season as a Wild Card team in 2016, while falling in the ALCS in both years.

Recently, he was a guest on Blair and Barker and one of the takeaways from his interview with the Toronto based radio show was that the five-time All-Star had some advice for Toronto's current shortstop. Tulowitzki was asked about what Bichette should do as a free agent. "I talked to Bo quite frequently to be honest and I would say, do what you feel is right and trust your gut, but I will say this, the grass isn't always greener."

Tulowitzki went on to say, "If you are comfortable in a place, and you feel like you have your routine down If you like the people you're coming to work with every day, and the city embraces you and appreciates you, and you get a fair deal, there's no reason to do anything else."

That should be music to the ears of Blue Jays fans as they are hoping that Bichette sticks around for at least a little while longer. Drafted by Toronto in the second round in 2016, Bichette has grown into a home town star and one of the best shortstops in the game. After a down year in 2024 where he battled injuries throughout the season, he has bounced back in 2025, producing a bWAR of 3.4 and leads the league in both hits (184) and doubles (44) while slashing .311/.357/.483 with an OPS+ of 128.

The Blue Jays already signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a mega extension deal and there have been indications they would like to do something similar with Bichette, but have yet to make any formal contract offer. Reports indicate that will be priority number one for the front office and Tulowitzki says Bichette would be wise to listen to that offer from the Blue Jays.

"I will respect Bo's decision and what he chooses to do, but trust me I will share those things with him. He's smart, he's got great people on his side and he'll make the best decision for Bo. But Toronto has been great to him, he loves playing there," says Tulowitzki.

While Tulowitzki's tenure with the Blue Jays ended rather unceremoniously as he battled injuries towards the end of his contract and finished his career by playing five games with the New York Yankees, it seems as if Tulo has nothing but positive things to say about Toronto.
