The Toronto Blue Jays made several big splashes this offseason in bolstering their roster for another potential World Series run in 2026. Whether it be the addition of former Cy Young finalist Dylan Cease, the durable Tyler Rogers who brings his perplexing arm angle, the rejuvenated overseas sensation Cody Ponce, or the prolific Japanese hitting star and surprising defensive stalwart Kazuma Okamoto, they all have the opportunity to be a difference maker for Toronto this upcoming season in paving the way for their winning success.
However, when it comes to the most important Blue Jays signing this past winter, that honor could fall in the hands of the returning Max Scherzer.
Max Scherzer could end up being the biggest difference maker in 2026
First of all, Scherzer has looked amazing so far this spring despite being already 41-years-old. In two starts, the veteran right-hander has dominated, holding his opponents off the scoreboard on just two hits with six strikeouts over 8.2 innings of work. More importantly, Scherzer has indicated that his thumb is no longer bothering him as he can now perform to his ability.
He also joined training camp late after signing with the Blue Jays in early March. As a result, with the way that he has been pitching already, it really shows that Scherzer is really zoned in, and getting himself 100% ready to be at his very best by Opening Day. Not to mention even his teammate George Springer has been giving his stamp of approval in bringing back Mad Max to Toronto.
In addition, the presence of Scherzer is even more significant and needed now for the Blue Jays after the injuries to Bowden Francis, Shane Bieber, and more recently José BerrÃos with his surprise elbow inflammation. All of a sudden, Scherzer will be counted upon big time by Toronto to help fill a major void in their starting rotation and could even be slotting into their top three alongside Opening Day starter Kevin Gausman and Cease.
In fact, the three-time Cy Young award winner could play a key role in holding the fort down by providing valuable innings and wins while the Blue Jays wait for their pitching reinforcements to return from injury.
On top of all of that, we all know the fiery character and vibe that Mad Max brings with him. By having such a heart and soul player, along with his motivating presence return to the clubhouse, it is the exact veteran leadership needed to help take the Blue Jays collective to the next level. So if Toronto does succeed in winning it all, there is without a doubt that Scherzer will be playing a major role in one way or another to help make it happen.
