As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in a position that fans haven't experienced in awhile: leading the AL East by five-and-a-half games over the New York Yankees.
After a massive series win against the Yankees and an encouraging 7-1 record since the All-Star break, the Blue Jays find themselves in a legitimate position to secure the division title, and potentially more.
With the team surging and exceeding expectations, it's clear the Blue Jays and General Manager Ross Atkins need to make one or more moves at the deadline if they hope to go all the way this season. However, three things can be true: Ross Atkins must approach this deadline with discipline and curiosity, not desperation.
Why Atkins Should Not Make a Panic Trade
While the Blue Jays have earned the right to be buyers and pose a legitimate threat to any team, they must be cautious at the trade deadline. From the outside looking in, this current roster is the most tight-knit it's been since 2016 and disrupting that chemistry could be detrimental.
It is July 25, and the best record in Major League Baseball belongs to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Consider that win-now trades in the past have already made the farm system weaker than it was a few years ago. High-upside players like Trey Yesavage, Arjun Nimmala, or Ricky Tiedemann might be traded for rental players or marginal contributors, which could have major repercussions later on, especially if the Blue Jays don't go far in the playoffs.
The Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays won't be going anywhere anytime soon. So, the Blue Jays need to go for it this season, especially with the uncertainty around their roster beyond 2025, while also keeping an eye on their future when making trades.
What an Ideal Deadline Looks Like
If the Blue Jays decide to part ways with some of their top prospects, they must look for players in return that have 2-3 years of control. With such a precarious future beyond this season, it is extremely important the Jays acquire players that can help them win now, but also in the future.
A strong deadline would look something like this:
- Acquiring players with multiple years of control, not rentals. Joe Ryan, Mitch Keller, and Jarren Duran come to mind.
- Trading from MLB depth to improve another area (moving a bat or 2 for a high-end bullpen arm).
- Keeping their top 2-3 prospects, especially Arjun Nimmala, unless it is for a transformative player
It is clear the Blue Jays need to make moves. They've earned the right to be in the position they're in and they should go all-in. However, just because they're in first place right now in the AL East, it doesn't mean they should fall into the trap of overpaying for a rental or someone that isn't going to contribute past this season.
This team is clearly good enough to compete, and with the right moves, they're good enough to win it all this season. The vibes and connection of this team could not be higher, and it is critical that Ross Atkins keeps this in mind when making any deals.
The AL East is there for the taking, but so is their future. So, let's wait and see what happens because this could be one of the most important trade deadlines in franchise history.
