White Sox flip former Blue Jays reliever into Luis Castillo surprise

A former Toronto Blue Jays reliever was involved in a major trade yesterday (Aug. 1) as the baseball world counts down the 6pm trade deadline on Monday (Aug. 3).

The Chicago White Sox included former Blue Jays reliever Seranthony Dominguez in their trade package to land Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo. The White Sox also sent outfielder Nolan Jones and prospect Boston Smith in the trade.

With this move, Dominguez's time with the White Sox has come to a quick end. The 6-foot-1 righty had just signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the White Sox this past offseason. However, after this trade, he will now be looking to make an impact with the Mariners.

In 43 games with the White Sox this season before the trade, Dominguez had a 4-3 record, a 3.99 ERA, 12 saves, and 47 strikeouts. Overall, he had his decent moments with the White Sox, but it is also understandable that they have included him in a trade package to land a three-time All-Star starting pitcher like Castillo. Dominguez struggled with consistency in the Windy City.

Dominguez should now serve as a solid part of the Mariners' bullpen as they look to climb the standings. The Mariners are currently just three games behind the Houston Astros for the top spot in the American League West. The Texas Rangers are also a game and a half ahead of the Mariners in the AL West.

Dominguez could be good addition for the Mariners if he regains his Blue Jays form

If Dominguez can pitch with the Mariners like he did with the Blue Jays last season, he could end up being a strong addition to their bullpen.

Dominguez proved to be a solid pickup for the Blue Jays last season after they acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles. In 24 appearances for the Blue Jays last season after the trade, he posted a 2-1 record, a 3.00 ERA, and 25 strikeouts. He was also heavily relied on during the Blue Jays' playoff run last year, posting a 2-0 record, a 3.18 ERA, and 10 strikeouts in 12 postseason appearances.

With this, it is understandable that the Mariners are taking a chance on Dominguez. He is a very solid reliever when pitching at his best, and it is going to be interesting to see how much of an impact he can make with the Mariners.

It also does not hurt that will be more than a rental for the Mariners if they keep him around, as he is signed through the 2027 season and has a mutual option for the 2028 campaign.
