Toronto Blue Jays President/CEO Mark Shapiro and GM Ross Atkins have led the team's front office since 2016 — a period in which the Jays have had plenty of ups and downs. They went from being legitimate contenders at the start of their tenure to going into a full rebuild before becoming a contender again.

However, after a disappointing 2024 campaign, there's a fear the Jays could be heading in the wrong direction again if their issues aren’t rectified soon. But, rather than starting a semi-rebuild, Shapiro and Atkins decided to retool this offseason in the hopes of getting back to their winning ways. But with that daring approach, their jobs could actually be on the line for this upcoming season.

As a result of that, the following five things must happen in the coming months for them to keep their jobs.

Here’s what has to happen for the Blue Jays front office to keep their jobs beyond 2025

1. The Jays need to add another big-name star

The Jays have already done a great job in recent weeks in bringing in some top-caliber players to help bolster their roster. After signing star outfielder Anthony Santander, they also added three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer to augment their rotation.

The Jays have been scrutinized during the previous offseason when they failed to land any big name players, instead settling with the likes of Justin Turner, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Yariel Rodríguez, among others.

The last time the Jays were successful in reeling in star players, they got Kevin Gausman and Matt Chapman and made the postseason in two straight seasons.

And while their acquisitions of Santander and Scherzer are good moves, they shouldn't stop there, not where star free agents Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman are available.
