After a sweep of the Athletics over the weekend, the Toronto Blue Jays head into the first week of June with a respectable 31-28 record. Having passed the Tampa Bay Rays to sit second in the American League East, Toronto will look to continue their winning success against the Philadelphia Phillies as they come to town for a three-game set starting on Tuesday. The Phillies are coming off a sweep of their own, at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers and will be looking to right the ship this week.
Nevertheless, the Blue Jays will be in for a tough test facing a Phillies team that is among the top five teams in the entire league. Here are three things to look out for as the Blue Jays take on the Phillies.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Philadelphia Phillies predictions, June 3-5: Jays to continue momentum
Slumpbusters wreaking havoc
Key role players in Ernie Clement and Addison Barger had encountered some immense struggles for the most part earlier this season for the Blue Jays. However, both players have come to life recently and have become integral parts of the team’s offensive attack.
After starting the season hitting a dreadful 3-for-31 in his first 14 games, Clement has drastically turned things around during the past month, compiling a .306 average and .818 OPS with 15 runs scored, three home runs and 12 RBIs in May. He is currently on a six-game hitting streak while batting .500 during that stretch.
As for Barger, he endured a similar slump after his promotion to the big leagues in mid-April, amassing a dismal .139 average and .427 OPS in his first 14 games with the Jays. After recently turning a corner, he has been a monster for Toronto, hitting a stellar .375 with an .833 OPS with six runs scored, three home runs and six RBIs during the past week. Most importantly, he has cut down his strikeout rate drastically from last season and looks to be getting more comfortable now at the big league level.

Look for both Clement and Barger to provide an offensive jolt for the Blue Jays in this series with the Phillies.
Reinforcement hopefuls
With various Jays players hitting the shelves with injuries in recent days, they received some reinforcements in the form of Alan Roden, Davis Schneider and Erik Swanson. Both Roden and Schneider had a less-than-stellar start to their 2025 campaign with Toronto and were ultimately optioned back down to Triple-A Buffalo to work on their game.
Roden made the most of it by compiling a spectacular .361 average, 1.029 OPS, with three home runs in 18 games. Schneider managed to turn things around more recently by hitting .275 with an .841 OPS along and four home runs in his past 22 games with Buffalo. Both players will be counted upon to fill the shoes of Anthony Santander and Daulton Varsho while they are out with their ailments.
As for Swanson, he began the year on the IL due to carpal tunnel syndrome in his right arm. Despite a forgettable 2024 campaign, Swanson was a vital piece of the Toronto's bullpen in 2023 in helping the team reach the postseason. Having him back once again with Yimi García on the mend and Jeff Hoffman’s Jekyll and Hyde performances of late, could go a long way in stabilizing the Blue Jays’ relief corps in their matchup against the Phillies.
Jays rolling, Phillies reeling
The Blue Jays have strung together five straight wins, and are 6-1 in their past seven games. More importantly, they demonstrated that they could get it done with both elite pitching and hitting. In the series against the Texas Rangers, Toronto held them to a single run over three games. Whereas against the Athletics, the Jays managed to outslug them 39-18 in an offensive explosion no one really expected.

The Phillies, on the other hand, have lost four straight, and five of their past seven games. As one of the best pitching and hitting teams in the leagues, Philadelphia uncharacteristically gave up a whopping 37 runs in their past four contests while scoring only 14 of their own.
Despite the Phillies owning Toronto during the past couple of seasons, having taken six of eight matches, the Blue Jays still hold the overall edge at 44-34 lifetime during the regular season. With the Phillies reeling, it is the perfect opportunity for Toronto to continue their winning ways.
