The Blue Jays climbed back to .500 this weekend thanks to a dominant series sweep over the Seattle Mariners.

Now, after a flight back across North America and a much-needed off day, the Blue Jays are back in action today for the start of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

While the two division rivals will see plenty of each other this year, this marks the first time the Blue Jays will see the Rays this year.

Tampa Bay enters today at 18-22 on the young season, and are coming off a series win over the Brewers.

First pitch for today's game is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. EDT, and will be available to stream on Sportsnet.

Probable starting pitchers

Jose Berríos (1-1, 3.86 ERA, 45 K) vs. Shane Baz (3-2, 4.93 ERA, 40 K)

Berríos will have his work cut out for him, as he's going against a Blue Jays' lineup that has plenty of experience against him. Ben Rortvedt, Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda, and Brandon Lowe all have 8+ plate appearances against Berríos in their career.

That said, only Díaz, Rortvedt and Aranda are the only ones with career batting averages of .300 against Berríos.

Díaz in particular is a Blue Jays killer, as he has a career .849 OPS in 64 career games against the Blue Jays.

Berríos has been on a tear as of late. He's gone 5+ innings in each of his last three starts, and has a 2.00 ERA in 18 innings across that span. He has a 4.52 ERA in 71 2/3 innings against the Rays in his career.

The Blue Jays will be going against Baz, who is working through a bit of a rough patch at the moment. He's allowed 13 runs combined over his last two starts after ending April with seven scoreless innings against the Padres.

He has a 2.12 ERA in 17 career innings against the Blue Jays, and allowed one run in six innings in his lone start against Toronto last year.

Toronto Blue Jays starting lineup, May 13

  • 1. SS Bo Bichette
  • 2. 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • 3. DH Anthony Santander
  • 4. RF George Springer
  • 5. CF Daulton Varsho
  • 6. 2B Ernie Clement
  • 7. 3B Addison Barger
  • 8. C Tyler Heineman
  • 9. LF Nathan Lukes

The big news here at the bottom of the lineup, as Heineman is handling catching duties one game after Alejandro Kirk left after getting hit by an errant backswing.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider hasn't spoken to reporters yet today so we don't have an update on Kirk just yet, but the Blue Jays can't afford to lose him just as he was starting to heat up at the plate.

Outside of that, there really isn't anythign noteworthy in the Blue Jays' lineup. Clement is once again at second base in place of Andrés Giménez, and the left-handed Lukes is getting the start in the outfield against the right-handed Baz.
