For the first time this year, the Toronto Blue Jays will take on the New York Yankees in a battle of American League East rivals.

While the series lost one big storyline when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. signed his 14-year, $500 million extension with the Blue Jays, a series between these two team doesn't need any extra fanfare.

The Blue Jays are currently looking up at the Yankees in the American League East standings, as the Toronto sits at 12-13 and three games in back of the Yankees.

The Blue Jays entered last weekend one game behind the Yankees at 12-8, but they've been mired in a five-game losing streak since, which led to a slide in the division's standings.

But that could all seem like a long time ago if the Blue Jays are able to win the series against the Bronx Bombers this weekend.

First pitch for Friday's series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. EDT from Yankee Stadium. The game will be available on Sportsnet.

Probable starting pitchers

José Berríos (1-1, 5.02 ERA, 24 K) vs. Carlos Carrasco (2-1, 6.53 ERA, 15 K)

Berríos is back on the mound after taking the loss his last time out against the Mariners.

This will be his fifth start this year against a fellow American League East opponent, and he's had a bit of an up-and-down performance against the rest of the division so far.

He allowed six runs against the Orioles on Opening Day and allowed four runs in his second start against them this year, but he also allowed just one run over seven innings against the Red Sox.

The longtime American League pitcher has made 14 career starts against the Yankees, where he has a 5.22 ERA in 79 1/3 innings. His stats are even worse at Yankee Stadium, as he has a 6.05 ERA in 41 2/3 innings.

He allowed five earned runs in five innings in his lone start at Yankee Stadium last year.

Aaron Judge has four home runs in 32 at-bats against him in his career, while new Yankee Cody Bellinger also has a home run against him.

He'll be going against Carlos Carrasco, who is in his first year with the Yankees after joining them in free agency in the offseason. He has a 6.53 ERA in five games this year, and is coming off a start where he allowed four runs in four innings against the Rays.

This will mark his 11th career start against the Blue Jays. He enters today with a career 4.70 ERA against Toronto in 59 1/3 innings in his career.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the lone current Blue Jay to have a home run against him in his career, while George Springer has a career .227 average against him in 22 at-bats.

Not much change for the Blue Jays' lineup. Ernie Clement and Nathan Lukes take over for Will Wagner and Alan Roden.

Guerrero's always loved hitting at Yankee Stadium, and he'll get his first chance to build on that in what will be a big series for the slumping Blue Jays.
