It's amazing how one swing can change things.

For eight innings on Wednesday, the Blue Jays failed to get anything going against the Texas Rangers, and seemed destined to another heartbreaking loss that would have resulted in a series loss.

Instead, Bo Bichette decided to play hero by coming off the bench in the ninth inning and recording a go-ahead two run home that helped salvage a winning series in Texas.

Now they'll welcome the Athletics to Rogers Centre for their first series of the year against an American League West team that's currently playing in the baseball wilderness.

Jose Berríos will get the ball for the Blue Jays and will be going against rookie starter Jacob Lopez. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. EDT, and the game will be available on Sportsnet.

Toronto Blue Jays probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Tampa Bay Rays, May 23

Probable starting pitchers

Jose Berríos (1-2, 4.22 ERA, 56) vs. Jacob Lopez (0-2, 2.57 ERA, 17 K)

Berríos is back on the mound for his final start in what's been a solid month of May for the veteran starter. While his ERA for this month if 4.20, that's a bit inflated thanks to a rough outing against the Rays where he allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

He's posted a quality start in his four other starts this month.

He allowed three runs in six innings his last time out in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The biggest thing to watch with Berríos will be how much swing and miss he gets. He's onlt had 15 stirkeouts across his last three starts combined, so it's clear that his strikeout stuff isn't there.

Lawrence Butler is the only Athletic hitter with a home run in their career against Berríos.

Lopez will be making his third start this season. He's thrown 14 innings this season, which is already a new career-high in MLB innings after he made brief appearances with the Athletics in 2023 and '24.

He's coming off the best start of his career where he allowed one run in seven innings against the Phillies.

His lone appearance against the Blue Jays came in 2023 when he allowed five earned runs in five innings in September 2023.

Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho are the only Blue Jays who have faced off against Lopez in their careers.
