Heading into the 2025 MLB season, Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Chris Bassitt had a questionable future with the Blue Jays, entering the year as an impending free agent. However, that didn't seem to loom over the team or the player for most of the year as the Blue Jays have been solid when Bassitt has been on the mound.
Through his start on July 23, Toronto was 14-8 in games Bassitt started, while the pitcher himself sported an 11-4 win/loss record. But his last couple of starts have not yielded any victories.
Bassitt's starts have been tough lately
As we're in mid-August now, the Blue Jays will need to take every game they can to not only remain on top of the AL East, but also compete for the best record in the American League, and that will only be made easier if Bassitt can regain his form from earlier this season. In July, Bassitt won four of his five starts for the month, but it was Bassitt's final start of the month which began a series of a couple of tough outings.
On July 28 against the Baltimore Orioles, Bassitt wouldn't make it through the third inning allowing six runs on seven hits and two home runs. In his next start against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 3, Bassitt was better, allowing in one run in six innings pitched. However, Bassitt walked three batters for the first time in four starts at that point and the Blue Jays went on to lose in extra innings at home.
Bassitt's most recent start was another tough one on Aug. 9 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He lasted 4.2 innings with allowing three runs on six hits, giving up two home runs in the process.
During his last three starts, Bassitt has had his earned run average increase to 4.17. It was under 4.00 as recently as July 23 when he brought it down to 3.88 after a solid start against the New York Yankees, but over the last three outings, it's risen again.
Bassitt's next turn in the rotation would be Friday night when the Blue Jays host the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre. However, the Blue Jays currently listed starters for that series are all TBD (as of Thursday morning). With Shan Bieber slated to make another rehab pitching assignment on Friday, the Blue Jays could be making a move in the rotation to adjust for his impending Toronto debut.
Regardless of when Bassitt's next outing comes, the Blue Jays would be happy to see more consistency from the 36-year-old right hander.
