This Blue Jays' star has been incredibly unlucky so far this season

Bo Bichette's been great this year but could still be even better.

One of the biggest storylines around the Blue Jays entering 2025 was a Bo Bichette rebound after the star shortstop worked through a injury-plagued 2024 season.

And while Bichette's gotten off to a much better start this year (he's hitting .297 and leads the American League with 22 hits), it seems like his numbers could be even better.

In fact, Bichette's been one of the unluckiest hitters in MLB based on expected slugging, which is an advanced metric that uses exit velocity and launch angle to predict what a players slugging percentage could be.

This is just acknowledging the hard contact that the players make and projecting how well they could be if these hard hits fall.

As this list shows the differential between Bichette's SLG vs xSLG is -.210, which shows that he's been hitting the ball hard, even if he hasn't gotten the results to show for it.

While his .391 SLG could be worse (.322 in 2024), things would look a lot different for the Blue Jays if it was replaced with his expected slugging of .601.

Blue Jays' shortstop Bo Bichette has been successful despite being unlucky in 2025

That expected slugging number lines up with all of his Statcast numbers, which show that he's bouncing back well.

He currently ranks in the 98th percentile in expecting batting average (.356), 93rd percentile in xwOBA (.416) and the 94th percentile in sweet-spot rate (46.8%).

He also has an average exit velocity of 91.7 mph average exit velocity, a barrel rate of 9.8% barrel rate and a hard-hit rate of 52.5%.

Bichette's seeing the ball well and making hard, solid contract. If he can keep this up, he could very easily be an All-Star this year.

Even with all that bad luck, Bichette is still batting .297 (22-for-74) with five doubles, 10 RBI and an American League-leading 22 hits.

While he's been unlucky, his 10 RBI is still tied with George Springer for the team lead, so it's good to see that hasn't stopped him from being productive from the leadoff spot.

He has a solid wRC of 107 along with a strikeout rate of just 16%. While he hasn't hit a home this year, he's already had seven multi-hit games and has been a spark plug atop Toronto's lineup.

All those stats will help him as he seeks a new contract in free agency after the season. There hasn't been a ton of buzz around him staying with the Blue Jays, though Ross Atkins said last week that he wants Bichette to stay a Blue Jay long-term, which was a positive sign.

Bichette's already racked up a ton of hits for the Blue Jays this season, but if he was a bit luckier he could have complemented those singles with some extra-base hits.

For now though, he is considered one of the unluckiest hitters in baseball. We would all like to see this come back for Bichette and use these well batted balls to continue a strong start to the season.
