While the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees are on a collision course for AL East supremacy, they will not see each other any more during the 2025 regular season. However, there is a very real chance they could face each other late in October and an all AL East matchup has one writer at MLB.com excited about it's potential.
Will Leitch recently wrote an article looking at the "12 potential LCS matchups we'd most like to see" and the Blue Jays vs Yankees was ranked as the number seven most anticipated matchup on his list.
These two opponents provide the most exciting playoff matchup for the Blue Jays
Leitch writes, "One of the most pivotal series of this entire season came back in early July, when the Blue Jays swept a four-game series from the Yankees to take over first place in the AL East, a position they haven’t let go of since. The Yankees are longtime tormentors of the Blue Jays, but that dynamic has never been tested in the postseason. This would be a particularly raucous environment, in both stadiums."
The narrative pretty much writes itself as the Yankees have long been viewed as the cream of the crop in the AL East while the Blue Jays every once in a while contend for that title. But the Blue Jays are in a position now where they are trying to close the gap on that 'every once in a while' sentiment and make it more of a yearly thing. There is plenty of star power on both side and these two teams have already played in some thrilling contests in 2025 - just imagine turning up the intensity between these clubs in the post-season.
The second matchup involving the Blue Jays that Leitch wants to see is a rematch from the 2022 AL Wild Card series, featuring Toronto's expansion cousin's, the Seattle Mariners. Leitch says, "Two fanbases that have been in theWorld Series wilderness for a long time, battling it out for the right to finally have their breakthrough. (Tigers-Mariners or Tigers-Blue Jays are other options for this, too.) Plus, the color scheme in this series would be wonderful."
While it's a weak argument for why Leitch wants to see this series, fans of both teams would love a chance to beat the other for a shot at the World Series. Seattle ended Toronto's playoff dreams in 2022 by winning the wildest come-from-behind game in their postseason history, erasing a seven-run deficit in Game Two, en route to sweeping the Blue Jays in Toronto. The Blue Jays would simply be looking to exorcise their playoff demons and what better way to do it than to beat a team that holds a playoff elimination over their heads.
The Mariners also feature a few players the Blue Jays were rumored to have interest in at the trade deadline in Eugenio Suarez and Canadian-born Josh Naylor. Seeing what those players could do versus the players Toronto did get at the deadline (Bieber, Seranthony Dominguez and Luis Varland) will be an interesting subplot - while Naylor would be playing against his former Cleveland teammates in Bieber, Andrés Giménez and Myles Straw.
Of course long-time Blue Jays fans would also be ecstatic to see a Toronto versus Detroit matchup. A throwback to one of the best rivalries in baseball during the 1980's.
