After Toronto Blue Jays weren't able to reach an extension with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before his self-imposed deadline at the start of spring training, the conversation around the star first baseman has turned to what his potential trade market could be.
Guerrero will have plenty of suitors in the trade market and/or free agency, and, according to a new article from TheScore, most of the big name suitors would end up breaking the hearts of Blue Jays fans everywhere.
These Vladimir Guerrero Jr. suitors could break Toronto’s heart
According to TheScore's Josh Gold, these are the eight clubs that make the most sense as potential sutiors for Guerrero.
- Toronto Blue Jays
- New York Yankees
- New York Mets
- Boston Red Sox
- Texas Rangers
- San Francisco Giants
- Chicago Cubs
- Los Angeles Angels
- Los Angeles Dodgers
The Yankees being so high on the list immediately stands out. At one point, Guerrero said that he'd never join the Yankees but has since changed his tune by saying that he'd consider any club in free agency.
The Yankees are an obvious suitor for Guerrero considering they made the World Series last year and have the money to offer him a huge contract.
Gold also mention the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers, who are all expected to be aggressive next offseason as they look to move back into championship contention.
They could all be prepared to spend big and make Guerrero a record offer in free agency in an attempt to woo one of the best first baseman in the sport.
Even if the Yankees don't get Guerrero, it's clear that the Red Sox are also interested in getting Guerrero, which would hurt just as much as seeing Guerrero in pinstripes.
The San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, and Los Angeles Dodgers were the final four teams that were listed.
Outside of the Dodgers, all those teams are in a tier below the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Rangers they aren't as appealing. The Dodgers are famous for spending big and trying to stack up their lineup, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see them go after Guerrero even if they had Freddie Freeman entrenched at first base.
It's going to be a massive season for the Blue Jays.
They made some big moves in the offseason in the hopes of becoming a bonafide championship contender, but Guerrero's looming free agency is going to be the biggest storyline all season. If the Blue Jays aren't able to get a deal done with him, they may even consider trading him at the deadline so they can at least get something in return for him.
Regardless of what happens, Guerrero's future is destined to become of the biggest stories for the Blue Jays this year — and all of baseball.
