As rumor's continue to swirl on both Anthony Santander and Alex Bregman being pursued by the Toronto Blue Jays, the unfortunate trend has been that Toronto is being used as leverage for these free agents to land deals with other clubs.
If the season started tomorrow, the Jays would begin the pivotal 2025 season with Joey Loperfido starting in left field and Will Wagner as potentially it’s starting third baseman. Loperfido will be 26 in May, Wagner is 26 on opening day meaning neither guy is really a prospect anymore, however, they only have a combined 328 plate appearances at the Major League level.
In those small sample sizes, Wagner was great (.305/.337/.451) with a .788 OPS in 24 games, while Loperfido was not (.214/.264/.350) with a .614 OPS in 81 games.
Should the Blue Jays fail to add anyone else, both Joey Loperfido and Will Wagner need to have breakout years in 2025
The Blue Jays will be banking on Wagner to continue that trajectory. He has hit everywhere he has played, with a (.297/.402.441) slash line through four seasons of minor league ball. His glove work around the infield has been impressive to and Toronto's long term solution at third base could be solved right here. He doesn’t hit for a ton of power (just 25 minor league home runs and two in MLB), but he consistently puts the ball in play by finding holes. Coming off knee surgery this offseason, Wagner should be ready to go in time for spring training.
Loperfido made headlines last year with arguably the catch of the year and his glove work has been impeccable since he was called up to the majors. However, what the Jays will be banking on from Loperfido is that he taps into that power potential that has started to develop in the minors over the last two seasons. In 2023 across three minor league levels, Loperfido hit 27 home runs and finished with an .880 OPS.
Last season in 39 games in Triple-A, he had 13 home runs and a .933 OPS. This is a team who has seen their power numbers dwindle for three straight seasons going from 262 homers in 2021 to 156 in 2024, ranking 26th in the league last year. If Loperfido can find that power stroke as the everyday left fielder, it would go a long way to lengthening the lineup.
Wagner and Loperfido hit from the left side, which likely gives them an opportunity to get more starts to help balance the lineup, alongside other lefties in centre fielder Daulton Varsho, and second baseman Andres Gimenez.
With both guys coming over from the Houston Astros in the Yusei Kikuchi trade at last years deadline, the Jays season could hinge on a breakout performance from Loperfido and Wagner.
