For the first time in 32 years, the Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the World Series. They got there in the most fitting way possible for the comeback kids, rallying from being down 2-0 and 3-2 in the ALCS to win in seven games against the Seattle Mariners. The team that racked up 49 comeback wins during the regular season added three more to their tally in the championship series.
The Blue Jays had many memorable moments during the ALCS, but before we get into the top five, let's start with some honourable mentions.
Addison Barger hits a two-run home run in Game 6: Addison Barger set the tone for the Blue Jays in a must-win Game 6. In his first at-bat in the second inning, he hit an RBI single to open the scoring. In his next at-bat in the next inning, he did even better, hitting a two-run home run with two outs to put the Blue Jays up 4-0. The Blue Jays went on to win 6-2, forcing a Game 7.
Chris Bassitt's late relief in Game 7: Chris Bassitt came into Game 7 right after George Springer had given the Blue Jays their first lead of the night (more on that later). Bassitt's only other appearance in this postseason came in Toronto's 10-3 loss in Game 2.
On Monday, he came in with the Blue Jays six outs away from the World Series. Randy Arozarena lined out on the first pitch he saw. Bassitt then struck out Eugenio Suarez before forcing J.P. Crawford into a groundout. In ten pitches, Bassitt got the Blue Jays within three outs of the World Series.
Jeff Hoffman strikes out the side to clinch the pennant: Jeff Hoffman was on the receiving end of a lot of criticism from Blue Jays fans near the end of the regular season for his lack of reliability. In the postseason, however, he has shown why the Blue Jays continue to put their faith in him.
One day after an incredible Game 6 performance where he struck out four over two innings to close out the game, Hoffman did it again. He entered in the ninth inning of Game 7. The Blue Jays needed three outs. Hoffman struck out Leo Rivas, Dominic Canzone, and finally, Julio Rodríguez. Three up, three down, and the Blue Jays were headed to the World Series.
On to the list!
