The chase for Alex Bregman has been going on for quite a while this offseason, but we might've just been given a positive indication that his decision could come soon in favor of the Blue Jays. Or ... maybe Red Sox insider/beloved MLB media voice Peter Gammons is saying ... something different?

Toronto has not landed very many free agents this offseason, despite being in the mix for a handful of them, so any time a national writer associates them with a big name, we'll take it. That said, Gammons's message wasn't totally straightforward.

The Bostonian, knowing full well that the Red Sox had made noise at their Fenway Fest over the weekend regarding their wishy-washy current status on Bregman, stated that two major league executives believe that the Blue Jays are the top sleepers for Bregman. He also, unfortunately, started his message with, "In a clickbait world..."

Was he saying that these executives have been duped by the media drumming up Toronto's interest in Bregman? Or was he saying that, amidst all the clickbait (most of it Red Sox-focused), it's clear that Toronto is emerging as a force for Bregman inside MLB circles in the real world? Gammons is a very credible source, too, so this could be the big move Toronto fans have been waiting for all offseason.

Peter Gammons sends confusing message regarding the Blue Jays and star third baseman Alex Bregman.

At first, his post seems like satire, but given his history in baseball, anything he notes is a legitimate rumor.

If Bregman is actually getting closer to taking Toronto's money, the boost he'd bring to the Blue Jays offense would be great for years to follow. Bregman's current contract demands reportedly sit around seven years and $200 million, which doesn't seem to be "clickbait".

It is uncertain whether Bo Bichette or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be Blue Jays in 2026, with plenty of trade rumors circling on where they will play in 2025. Obviously, extending Guerrero Jr. is what Toronto should do, but Bregman would be a great fall back option if they were to move on from Bichette early.

There are many ways to look at a Bregman signing, but all of them are positive. Hopefully, their status as a sleeper team comes more to light soon. It is uncertain what the Blue Jays have offered, but the star wants over $200 million in free agency. Toronto has proven their willingness this offseason to hand out contracts of that size, but they have been unsuccessful in doing so. This signing may make or break the 2025 season given the holes that they currently have, but time will tell what happens.
