In a perfect world, top prospect Orelvis Martinez would have arrived with the Toronto Blue Jays last season and made himself an indispensable asset in the process. However, his highly anticipated big league debut was short-lived, as he was handed an 80-game PED suspension just one game into his MLB career. Nevertheless, as the Jays’ best power-hitting prospect in their system, many still believed that he will be back sooner rather than later.
Now over two months into the 2025 MLB regular season, we have seen the promotions of Addison Barger, Jonatan Clase, and even the likes of Michael Stefanic and Ali Sánchez, but Martinez has yet to get the call. As a matter of fact, it is now more likely that if we are to see Martinez in a Jays’ uniform this season, it would ultimately come as a September call-up. Why is that?
Predicting when Orelvis Martinez will make his debut with the Blue Jays in 2025
Timing just wasn’t on the 23-year-old infielder’s side. Earlier on in the season, the Jays were struggling mightily with offense, with key infielders such as Ernie Clement, Will Wagner and even Andrés Giménez all mired in huge slumps. That would have been the perfect opportunity for Martinez to get the call to help jumpstart the offense.
Unfortunately, Martinez was also off to a miserable start to his 2025 campaign with the Jays’ Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons, posting a dismal .147 average, .516 OPS, along with just five runs scored, two home runs, five RBIs and a whopping 30 strikeouts in 68 at-bats during the month of April. As a result, it was difficult to warrant a promotion to the big league club with such an underwhelming performance.
But Martinez has picked up his game since then, especially with a strong June thus far, having compiled five runs scored, four home runs and six RBIs over just eight games. In fact, in just last week’s series against the Syracuse Mets alone, he was a monster as he collected eight hits and smacked four home runs in the process. With that, Martinez appears to be ready for the big show any time now.

However, Toronto’s offense has also heated up recently, averaging over six runs per game during the past couple of weeks. More significantly, both Clement and Barger have drastically turned their games around to be big-time contributors. Added to the recent impressive return of Giménez, it has essentially left no space to potentially add Martinez to the roster, even if Toronto wanted to.
So barring an injury or two, and with the way that the Jays have been playing, Martinez will have to wait to finally get his chance with the major league club this year. When he does get the call, likely during the latter parts of the season, he would make due as an elite power bat coming off the bench for pinch-hitting duties, as well as getting the odd spot start to help give some of the Blue Jays’ everyday infielders some rest. Hopefully by that time, Martinez will finally get to show that he belongs with the big boys.
