You just cannot make this stuff up. In the Blue Jays' 2023 home opener, Kevin Kiermaier is already proving himself to be a human highlight reel.
In the very first inning of Tuesday night's contest against the Tigers, the three-time Gold Glover scaled the center field wall to rob Detroit's Kerry Carpenter of what would've easily been a home run.
Time to officially tab center field in Rogers Centre "Kiermaier Country". I mean, my goodness. What. A. Catch.
Kiermaier is no stranger to web gems, as he has established himself as one of the game's best defenders out there of the past few decades. The longtime Rays outfielder has robbed his fair share of Blue Jays home runs over the years, so it's nice to have him being one of the good guys for a change.
When the 32-year-old first signed with the Blue Jays in the 2022-2023 offseason, the move was met with a ton of backlash. Why on earth would Ross Atkins and Co. bring someone aboard who has been essentially made of glass throughout his big league career?
In the early goings of the season, Kiermaier has shown exactly why he can be such a valuable asset. There's no coincidence that he was such a strong contributor to the Rays over the years whenever he was healthy. Now that he's switched sides in the AL East, he seems to be at full health and is excelling in all facets to start 2023.
While he's still appeared in under 10 games so far, Kiermaier already has a five-RBI game under his belt (Sunday against the Angels) and has been coming up clutch against both left-handed and right-handed pitching, a welcomed trait that he has not always shown over the years.
Nobody expects him to hit 20 home runs, contend for a batting title, or win an MVP Award. However, if he Kiermaier can continue to hit as he has and post some incredible web gems like this one, his contract will prove to be a steal for the Blue Jays.
