Not like the fans needed any reminders, but the Toronto Blue Jays lost a devastating heartbreaker to the New York Mets the last time out. Starter Bowden Francis took a no-hitter into the ninth inning for the second time in three weeks, only to lose it on a home run each time. This time though, the Blue Jays bullpen also ended up blowing it, as the Mets took the series finale 6-2. Toronto will look to bounce back against another National League foe in the St. Louis Cardinals in the three-game weekend set starting on Friday.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The Blue Jays will have veteran Kevin Gausman making his 29th start of the season. Having lost three of his last four decisions, Gausman will be looking to make amends versus a Cardinals team in which he sports a career 1-5 record with a 3.43 ERA against. On the season, Gausman has compiled a 12-11 record with a 4.09 ERA, 1.24 WHIP with 150 strikeouts in 163 innings pitched.
  • The Cardinals will counter with right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde. Fedde has struggled in a Cardinals uniform since he was acquired from the Chicago White Sox back at the trade deadline. In seven starts with St. Louis, he has posted a 1-5 record with a 4.30 ERA, 1.27 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in 37.2 innings of work. For the season, Fedde has amassed a solid 8-9 record with a 3.39 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 138 strikeouts in 159.1 total innings pitched between the White Sox and Cardinals.
