Who would've thought that one of the year's best pitching duels would come at the hands of Kevin Gausman and .... Easton McGee? In Saturday's game, the Blue Jays won 1-0 in 10 innings after Gausman went seven inning with 13 (!!) strikeouts. McGee, earning a spot start for the Mariners, deserves a tip of the cap as well, as he went 6.2 innings and while he struck out only two batters, he held the Blue Jays hitless until a Matt Chapman double knocked him out of the game. Hats off to him.

Probable starting pitchers

  • 34-year-old Chris Bassitt is set to make his sixth start of the 2023 campaign. After having a meltdown in his Blue Jays debut against the Cardinals back at the beginning of April, Bassitt has rebounded to throw four straight six inning-plus starts. He has done a much better job at keeping the Jays in the ballgame and while the walks should probably come down a bit, he has done well early on.
  • Left-hander Marco Gonzales will make the fifth start of his season opposite Bassitt. Gonzales, 31, has been one of the steadier presences in this Mariners rotation, posting 3.32 ERA and 3.96 FIP through 21.2 innings of work. He is a major groundball pitcher who excels at keeping the ball low, which could work out nicely as the Blue Jays have been great at playing smallball to start the year.
