Following a gut-wrenching 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays head to the west coast to face the San Diego Padres for a three-game weekend set. With a 10-9 record, the Blue Jays currently sit in fourth place in the AL East, three games behind the division-leading Yankees. Whereas for the Padres (11-10), they currently trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by only one game for the NL West lead after taking two of three from the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week. Jays catcher Danny Jansen will also be back in the lineup to make his second start on the season after coming back from his injury.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The Blue Jays will be sending Cuban sensation Yariel Rodríguez to the mound for his first road start this season. Rodríguez is coming off a strong MLB debut in which he gave up just one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched against the Colorado Rockies. He looks to build upon his solid start last Saturday as he searches for his first ever MLB win against the Padres tonight.
  • The Padres will counter with 27-year-old knuckleballer Matt Waldron. After making his MLB debut with the Padres last season, Waldron solidified his spot in the rotation for 2024 following a strong showing in spring training. In three starts to date, he has posted a 0-1 record with a 3.14 ERA, 1.47 WHIP with 16 strikeouts in 14.1 innings of work. Waldron will also be looking for his first win of the season as he makes his second home start on the year.
