Toronto Blue Jays probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Oakland Athletics, August 9
The Blue Jays' bullpen continues to melt down, the Blue Jays continue to lose ballgames and their vicious cycle of win one, lose one marches on. At 53-62, they are 14.5 games out of first place in the AL East and 10.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. Next up on the agenda is the Oakland Athletics, who the Blue Jays will play for the final time before they ditch Oakland and move to West Sacramento for the next three years.
Probable starting pitchers
- Making his 24th start of the year for the Blue Jays will be Jose Berrios, who's sporting a 4.11 ERA and 5.25 FIP through 135.2 innings of work on the season. The right-hander hasn't quite looked like himself in 2024, but he's remained healthy, which has been one of his best traits over the course of his nine-year career.
- Rule 5 selection Mitch Spence will make his 26th appearance and 15th start for Oakland. The 26-year-old was never expected to turn into much, but his transition from multi-inning reliever to starting pitcher has been pretty seamless, as his splits are equal between the two roles. On the year, he's got a 4.40 ERA and 4.17 FIP through 100.1 innings of work, striking out 7.5 batters per nine innings and sporting a hit and walk rate similar to the ones Berrios has.
