Following Saturday afternoon's 1-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics, this year's Toronto Blue Jays have fallen to 54-63, 15.5 games out of first place in the American League East and 10.5 games behind a Wild Card spot. Their -87 run differential is the third-worst in the entire AL and the Jays continue to struggle against beatable teams. Sunday's matchup against the A's will be the final time the Jays play them while they have "Oakland" as part of their name.

Prior to Sunday's game, the Blue Jays activated Genesis Cabrera from the paternity list and optioned Yerry Rodriguez to Triple-A Buffalo.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The Blue Jays will send right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound to make his 24th start of the year. It hasn't always been pretty for him this season, but he's remained durable and reliable, which is all the Jays can ask of him in a lost year. The 10-year veteran is 9-10 with a 3.95 ERA and FIP with a 103 ERA+. In his last outing against the Orioles, he went seven innings of two-run ball, striking out nine batters along the way.
  • Left-hander JP Sears is going to make his 24th start of the year as well. The 28-year-old has been one of the few positive storylines coming out of Oakland this year, even if his numbers aren't all eye-catching. He's 9-8 with a 4.35 ERA and 93 ERA+ across 126.1 innings of work. In each of his last two outings, he's gone seven innings while allowing three hits and one or less earned runs.
