Toronto Blue Jays probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. New York Yankees, June 29
Wow, hope the Blue Jays can bounce back from Friday’s disaster of a game
After the Toronto Blue Jays humiliated the division-leading New York Yankees 9-2 on Thursday, the Yankees returned the favour on Friday with a 16-5 drubbing of the hapless Jays. Adding insult to injury, the suddenly red-hot George Springer also had to leave Friday’s game due to a left hand contusion. Fortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any lingering effects as he is expected to be back in the lineup today. Battered, bruised and all, the Blue Jays will desperately look to get back in the win column on Saturday in the third game of the tough four-game set.
Probable pitchers
- Chris Bassitt will be making his 17th start of the season for the Blue Jays. Following a disastrous start to 2024, Bassitt has really turned things around as of late, going 4-2 with a stellar 2.36 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, giving up only 2 home runs in 61 innings of work since the beginning of May. The Jays will certainly need Bassitt to be at his best against one of the top offenses in the league in the Yankees.
- The Yankees will counter with 29-year-old left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes. Bouncing back from a dreadful 2023 season, Cortes has managed to regain back some of his Cy Young-calibre form seen from 2022 this year. In 17 starts, he has posted a tidy 3.40 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, with 18 walks and 93 strikeouts in 100.2 innings pitched. With a career 1-2 record and a bloated 4.73 ERA at Rogers Centre, Cortes will be in tough against the Jays team whose offense has suddenly come to life with 34 runs in their last five games.
