At this point, there's no avoiding it; the Toronto Blue Jays need to start piecing together wins now if they have any hope of making a deep postseason run. Losers of three straight games, the Jays are set to take on the Cleveland Guardians who are below .500 on the year and have a negative run differential. In frustrating fashion, it has felt all year like the Jays win against tough teams and consistently lose to teams they should beat up on.

Probable starting pitchers

  • For the Blue Jays, left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu will make his fifth start of the season. Upon his return from a lengthy Tommy John-induced absence, Ryu has been utterly dominant for the Jays. He currently sports a 1.89 ERA thanks to just four earned runs in 19 innings of work. Along the way, he has struck out 15 and walked just five.
  • In a battle of the southpaws, the Guardians are sending rookie lefty Logan Allen to the mound to make his 20th start of the year and his career. Allen has been a steady presence in Cleveland's rotation this year, posting a 3.31 ERA and 125 ERA+ to kick off his big league career. He isn't much of a strikeout pitcher, much like Ryu, but he also does a fairly efficient job at limiting baserunners, so the Jays offense will have to strike hard and strike often if they hope to stand a chance.
