At 57-64, the Toronto Blue Jays continue to drag themselves closer and closer to the .500 mark, which would be a significant victory in itself. They're 14.5 games out of first place in the AL East and nine games out of the Wild Card race, so focusing on a return to .500 in the second half of the season should be the goal from here on out. It certainly helps that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is putting together one of the best second-half performances in MLB history. Read more about his insane run here.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Through the first 12 starts of his big league career, Yariel Rodriguez - Friday's starter for the Blue Jays - had turned himself into a pleasant surprise. Not every inning has been pretty, but he's sporting a 3.60 ERA and 3.82 FIP through 50 innings of work. Across his last two times out, Rodriguez has gone 10.1 innings while striking out nine, walking two and allowing just one earned run.
  • Taking the mound for the Cubs will be senior citizen Kyle Hendricks, who's scheduled to make his 22nd appearance and 17th start of the season. The 11-year veteran has struggled mightily with consistency this season, sporting a 3-10 record with a 6.60 ERA in 91.1 innings of work, but his last few starts have provided a small glimpse of hope. In 11 innings, he's surrendered five earned runs on nine hits, which isn't exactly great, but it's an improvement.
