The Toronto Blue Jays have been struggling of late, having lost four straight and seven of their past nine games. On Friday night, they had no answer for Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried, who held the Blue Jays scoreless over seven innings to go along with eight strikeouts. The Blue Jays (67-75) will aim to even up the series in game two of the three-game weekend set against the Braves (77-64) on Saturday.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The Blue Jays will have right-handed pitcher José Berríos take the mound for the 29th time this year. Berríos has been easily the team’s ace this season, leading the pitching staff by posting a stellar 14-9 record with a 3.59 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, along with 134 strikeouts in 170.1 innings pitched. He will be in search of his career-best 15th win of the season when he takes on the Braves on Saturday.
  • The Braves will counter with former second-round pick Spencer Schwellenbach. The 24-year-old right-hander has been putting together a strong rookie season with the Braves since making his MLB debut back at the end of May. In 16 starts, Schwellenbach has compiled a 5-6 record, 3.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, with only 19 walks and 104 strikeouts in 92.2 innings of work. In particular, he has not given up more than three runs in each of his past seven starts and will be looking to continue that dominance against the Blue Jays.
