Neither of the Blue Jays September call-ups are the ones fans expected
Jonatan Clase and Jake Bloss? Never.
The Toronto Blue Jays have had a ton of roster turnover this season, highlighted by a significant sell-off at the trade deadline. Every single player on an expiring contract was sent packing, as were two controllable assets with contracts that extend beyond the current season.
Since the deadline, there's been a revolving door all around the offense and pitching staff, predominantly in the bullpen. As September call-up season neared, followers of the Blue Jays have been speculating who the two names would be, with outfielder Jonatan Clase and starting pitcher Jake Bloss (two deadline acquisitions) being the most popular names.
Instead, Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling has shared on X that it'll be neither of them. Typically, teams will use the two additional roster spots on one position player and one pitcher. Instead of Clase and Bloss, Zwelling says that infielder Luis De Los Santos and reliever Brandon Eisert will get the promotions.
The Blue Jays have also taken to X to confirm the move(s).
Blue Jays September call-ups confirmed
Clase and Bloss have both had troubles in Triple-A, so it makes sense why they were not the ones getting promoted. However, since the 2024 campaign is a lost one anyways, it also would've made sense to give two of the organization's shiny new prospects a look at the game's highest level. Both of them are expected to be key figures on the 2025 roster, so giving them their first shot now wouldn't have been the worst idea in the world.
For what it's worth, Zwelling posted a follow up on X saying that the Blue Jays do still intend on having Bloss pitch in the big leagues this year. In his last start, he recorded just five outs while surrendering eight runs on nine hits.
Instead, it'll be De Los Santos, a long-time minor league veteran who's finally getting a(nother) shot in the big leagues and Eisert, a southpaw who's been firmly in the middle of the revolving door in the Jays' bullpen.
De Los Santos, 26, initially joined the Blue Jays all the way back in 2016 as an international free agent signing. He gradually worked his way up the ranks and earned his first promotion earlier this season. In three games, he went 2-for-7 (.286) with a run scored. He's experienced at all four spots around the infield and will be a backup at each position down the stretch.
Eisert, also 26, has had a few different stints in the big leagues this year, but he's only got two appearances to show for it. In 4.2 innings of work, he's surrendered three runs on five hits (5.79 ERA) with four walks and zero strikeouts. Down in Triple-A, where he's spent the majority of his time for the third consecutive season, Eisert has a much more respectable 3.99 ERA across 37 appearances and 47.1 innings.
