Bo Bichette makes his stance clear on sticking with the Blue Jays long-term
It's fair to say that the 2024 season hasn't been the easiest for Bo Bichette. He's put up the worst offensive numbers of his career, spent half of his season on the injured list whilst having to deal with the madness of the trade deadline. He's a free agent at the end of next season and this was the first time in his career his name was swirled in rumors. Ultimately the Blue Jays had no intention of letting Bichette go unless a good offer came in and on Monday Bichette provided a positive update on his future.
Speaking to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi, Bichette stated 'my ultimate goal is to play with Vladdy and to win a championship with him.' This is a complete change of heart from a player who previously said 'they wouldn't be surprised if they were traded' at the Deadline. Now Bichette's had time to contemplate his future in the organization, this statement is something the fanbase needed to hear. It will be tough to extend both Guerrero and Bichette a huge financial commitment would be needed plus money has to be spent on rebuilding the worst bullpen in the majors. Yet, Bichette has clear intentions: 'I want to win first off with Vladdy, for this organization.'
Finishing the season healthy will be key for Bichette and the Blue Jays heading into next season knowing they'll have to improve if they're planning to contend in the toughest division in baseball. For now though, Bichette 'just wants to get back onto the field and be around the team.' He should be commended for taking the time to reflect on his poor season and clarifying comments he made earlier in the season. Although it'll be a difficult task to extend the two biggest stars of this franchise given Guerrero intends to remain with the team long-term, the fact that Bichette seems committed could be an interesting storyline to follow in the months ahead.
Bichette is due to head out on a rehab assignment with the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday. If all goes well, he's on track to be activated for the Rangers series in Arlington.
